Starting from the formal experimentation of his core material, Parker Smith deploys the Shibari technique of Japanese erotic tying, consisting of immobilizing the body through aesthetic lines and knots similar to macramé. In addition to creating beautiful patterns with rope, body and limb placements, Shibari rigging induces physiological conditions which are similar to the “runners high” experienced by athletes. The term “rope drunk” is sometimes affectionately used to describe the euphoric condition of the willing model after a Shibari experience. 

The sculpture’s physical and symbolic tension between materials and meaning allows a critical commentary on love and sexual practices, as well as on the way they are depicted, mediated and experienced. The works convey humor, absurdity, pleasure and pain and employ materials and processes that closely connect the edition to the artist’s wider practice.
