Louis Buhl & Co. is proud to announce a new edition with artist Sam Friedman, titled Untitled (Beach Print No.2). Having grown up in upstate New York, Friedman is deeply inspired by the outdoors and seeks the state of mind that he encounters within nature. Though his works have elemental and naturalistic qualities, they are built not by reference to the physical aspects of the outdoors, but by the flow and movement within nature to address questions about the practice of painting itself. ⁠Organic and meditative, Friedman’s works pilot a plane that takes us from the ethereal to the earthly, on a ride that is neither past nor present, but rather timeless, accessible, and transformatively escapist. 

Influenced by his ‘Beach Painting’ series, Untitled (Beach Print No.2) further demonstrates Friedman’s ability to move between representation and abstraction with seeming ease and spontaneity. Within the edition, Friedman continues his exploration of breaking down and rebuilding natural landscapes, something he achieves through his distinctive use of line, pattern, and bright color. A black background symbolizing a dark night’s sky serves as the work’s foundation, the vibrancy of the foregrounded elements amplified as a result. Striking and instinctual, Untitled (Beach Print No.2) is a transformative work with a radiating energy that carries through to its audience.
