Louis Buhl & Co. is pleased to present Three Yellow Rectangles, the first print edition created by artist Robert Moreland, set to release on Thursday, September 22nd, 2022. In his wall works, maquettes, and freestanding objects, Moreland’s constructions represent an arresting intersection between painting and sculpture. With hand-stretched canvases along angled wooden beams, held together cleanly by leather hinges, Moreland’s works are as much an investigation of material as they are a declaration of objective unity on a minimalist picture plane.
Considering the three-dimensionality that is largely characteristic of Moreland’s work, solidifying a process of translating that quality onto paper in an effective way has been a long time coming, and introduced a fresh challenge that the artist was excited to undertake. When it comes to his wall works, instead of simply experimenting with shaped canvases or geometric painting alone, Moreland folds the two-dimensional plane to see how line and color are disrupted by actual volume; as a result, light plays across the angled surfaces and drops shadows that echo multiple profiles of the work. Through the utilization of different tones of yellow within Three Yellow Rectangles’ composition, Moreland emanates this same illumination, hinting at a light source that adds another layer of subtlety to the piece. Forging an illusive perception of volume and dimension, Three Yellow Rectangles keeps true to the simplistic nature upon which Moreland’s work is built and signifies the beginning of his exploration in print media.
