Louis Buhl & Co. is pleased to present Blue Switchback with Curve, a new print edition by LA-based artist Robert Moreland. Known for his wall works, maquettes, and freestanding objects, Moreland’s constructions represent an arresting intersection between painting and sculpture. Utilizing hand-stretched canvases along angled wooden beams, cleanly joined by leather hinges, his works are as much an investigation of material as they are a declaration of objective unity on the minimalist picture plane.

Considering the three-dimensionality that is largely characteristic of Moreland’s work, translating that quality onto paper presents new challenges for the artist. In his pursuit to achieve a dimensional effect, Moreland employs various techniques to forge an illusive perception of volume and depth on the flat surface. Blue Switchback with Curve features a spot-varnish, which adds a subtle sheen to carefully identified portions of the print, hinting at a light source playing across angled surfaces. By mimicking the dynamic interplay of light on his sculptural works, Moreland successfully translates the tactile experience of his physical constructions onto paper, bridging the gap between two and three dimensions.
