Louis Buhl & Co. is pleased to present a series of monoprints by artist Richard Colman. Colman’s figurative works, typically rooted in themes of social dynamics and isolation, utilize complex symmetrical compositions, personal symbology and a unique use of color to explore our relationships with ourselves, others and the world around us. He moves freely between figuration and abstraction, at times focusing on pattern to such a degree that it overwhelms any recognizable components in his painting; other times Colman privileges figures and narratives.
Signature to Colman's work, the monoprints blend figurative imagery with bold geometry and vibrant colors. Illustrating a feminine protagonist cradling a flower, Colman meticulously lays out each compositional element in a way where it is isolated yet seamlessly interwoven into the piece. At first glance, the primary subject is distinguishable. Upon closer examination, their seemingly boundless limbs gradually fuse into the work’s background, making for a complex visual narrative.
