Louis Buhl & Co. is excited to present the newest release from artist Jason REVOK, titled Loop_Magenta_Umarine_2a. All of Revok’s processes have a high degree of systematic operation, with the tools themselves developed to produce mathematically prescribed strokes, while the use of spray paint leaves disordered, dripping marks. The artist strives for this paradox in his work, saying “I try to resolve all the societal turmoil and chaos I feel in the simplest language possible. Lines repeating inward or outward are creation and destruction infinitely repeating, only limited by the surface of the work’s support. I try to create vibrating energy, a meditation object for internal reflection. As miserable and awful as everything seems, I try to find some comfort in my art. The tools were the initial inspiration, but the works have become something else.” While early presentations focussed on the mechanics and aesthetics of his instrument use, depersonalization-derealization dug deep to consider the mental, emotional and existential impact of an abstract practice that borders on automation in a climate of media addiction, relentless digital communication, environmental collapse, and severe political disruption.
This regular print features a succession of hand-pulled screens, with a small set of hand-embellished pieces available that include hand-painting and spray can instrument details. Once separate bodies of work, REVOK combines his Tape Loop and Instrument Exercise mechanisms to create a bridge between them; unique hybridized pieces that use buzzing concentric lines and gradient as a base with subtle methodical spray accents on the surface.
