Louis Buhl & Co. is pleased to present a limited edition lithograph with Paul Verdell, the first-ever print the artist has produced, titled In a Field and releasing Thursday, August 8, 2022. Working primarily in oil paint and pastel, Verdell’s use of varying exposures of canvas and paper between his strokes and fields of color add a feeling of ephemerality and fleeting exchange, allowing the viewer space to explore and question relationships between audience, artist, and subject. In order to create In a Field, Verdell worked alongside printer Lee Marchalonis at her studio in Detroit.
Foundational to Verdell’s practice are his drawings on paper, thus the process of creating a lithograph proved a seamless transition for the artist’s work. In a Field is an interpretive self portrait; an escapism piece of sorts, where Verdell is set napping in a field and tuning out the world around him. An influence of Detroit at play, Verdell cites the various open fields and abandoned homes with overgrown and wild lawns he has observed to be on his mind throughout the scene’s development. A particular fascination with the composition’s background, the piece is a subtle introduction to Verdell’s latest body of work, which densely focuses on abstract interpretations of landscapes.
