Louis Buhl & Co. is pleased to present our first edition with Brooklyn-based artist Michael Dotson, titled Good Spirit. Using a bright and unnatural color palette, Dotson creates works that are reminiscent of computer-simulated environments. Inspired by technology's growing power to bring any fantasy to life, Dotson has mastered a painting technique that is clean, crisp, and mechanical — the precision of his linework used as a tool to accentuate the artificiality of simulated 3-D spaces. In a world that is increasingly reliant on technology, Dotson’s work tells an interesting story about the connection between the digital world and the analog practice of painting.
Rooted in paradox, Dotson’s paintings suppress any trace of apparent material, but induce a great sense of movement. The first formal print edition the artist has ever produced, Good Spirit is a part of Dotson’s most recent series of work, Floaters, which consists of fluid shapes extruded within a frame. Says Dotson about the edition: “the shapes form together and break apart, creating an experience similar to seeing a cloud that looks like an animal — the extrusion and frame holds that moment of flux together.” Animated, vibrant, and unique, Good Spirit evokes a sense of joy and optimism.
