Louis Buhl & Co. is pleased to present a series of eight unique sculptures by artist Bayne Peterson. Historical precedents such as biomorphic abstraction, Modernism, and various craft traditions inform his works in dyed plywood, natural wood, and metal. Repeated lines, concentric ovals, and multiple sections of color arranged into an orthogonal grid appear to tilt, shift, and confound the eye.

The spirit of play is at the root of Peterson’s work, and the sculptures that compose his latest series are inspired by the game of chess, particularly the pawn. Says Peterson: “Formally, I find pawns to be beautiful in their simplicity and rotational symmetry. Pawn design varies, but they all tend to include a sphere supported by a base. I took this formal starting point and then departed from it to a certain extent, designing my own unique variations.” Conceptually, the chess piece plays into Peterson’s interest in highlighting humble objects that have surprisingly powerful capabilities. Pawns are the smallest pieces on the chess board, with the least individuality—a line of identical pieces that can move only one space at a time. However, pawns have the capacity, in collaboration with other pieces, to checkmate the king and win the game. They further possess the magical ability of transforming into any other chess piece, except for the king. Based on these thoughts, Peterson elevates the subject through color, pattern and form. The eight sculptures are cohesive in their design qualities, yet each exhibits a strong sense of individuality through their distinctive form and tailored features.
