Louis Buhl & Co. is pleased to present a new Salon Highlight with Hedy Yang, opening November 17th, 2023. Yang is a ceramicist whose work derives from her desire to create meaningful, handcrafted objects with an emphasis on detail and quality inspired by her life.
Yang’s practice is an active effort to continuously improve her craft and the formal qualities of her sculptures. The populated presentation of vessels at a variety of shapes and sizes exemplifies Yang’s interest in exploring the ins and outs of her material to the fullest degree—clay’s relationship to gravity, form, pressure and tension. Looking to her surroundings, her goal is to take ideas and moments grounded in time and repackage them into whimsical and luxurious works for ceramic art.
The cloud series began during a post-graduate residency in the Adirondack Mountains of Upstate New York. Hailing from metro Detroit, Yang experienced a major culture shock at the secluded site, where she had no access to a car or cellular connection. It was during this period that, in addition to exploring the formal aspirations of her craft, Yang adopted a greater interest in mining the conceptual well of her creations. She found solace in actively observing each morning’s sunrises and each evening’s sunsets, noting the space these daily phenomena created for her to keep perspective and practice gratitude. As she explains, “the sunrises and sunsets in the mountains were the most beautiful thing I had ever seen; no traffic lights or telephone lines in sight, only nature.” Yang channels the deep, uninterrupted connection to nature she experienced through her designs which are concise in their subjects: fluffy clouds embraced by gradients of color that allude to the awe-inspiring celestial patterns. Her ability to create endless unique works using the same content matter attests to the sky’s everchanging canvas and its capacity to externally stimulate humanity.
