Louis Buhl & Co. is pleased to present a new Salon Highlight with Detroit-based artist Amy Feigley-Lee. Feigley-Lee’s studio practice delves into the realm of geometric abstraction and has evolved to focus primarily on creating intricate collage pieces composed of found vintage wallpapers. She is inspired by the inherent colors, patterns and textures of her material, as well as the formalist sensibilities that come with being an art foundations educator.

Working in a two-dimensional sphere, Feigley-Lee’s latest works strive to achieve a palpable sense of depth and texture through the assembly of her collaged surfaces. The artist’s interest in dimensionality draws from her background as a sculptor, which she channels through the layering and weaving of material, creating an illusion of space in the rendering of geometric forms. Feigley-Lee makes sense of her irregular configurations through the intricate ordering of line and color, a strategy which successfully elicits a multitude of diverse angular perspectives depending on one’s viewpoint.

Beyond her material’s ability to allow an intuitive workflow, the aesthetics and symbolization of the wallpaper relate to domestic narratives and personal memories of growing up. Contrasting hard geometries with the softness of florals, Feigley-Lee redefines her material’s historical purpose as an ambient backdrop and catapults it into an object that commands a central presence. In doing so, she receives the satisfaction of “subverting order via abstraction, allowing [herself] to reclaim such rigid floral repeats that symbolize femininity and domesticity and make them [into her] own statements of beauty and dissent.” Through this process which she describes as “healing,” Feigley-Lee creates personal reflections that give shape to her inner landscape.
