Louis Buhl & Co. is pleased to present our first edition with Los Angeles-based artist Hannah Lupton Reinhard, titled In the Summertime, for my Bubbie. In her vibrant portraits, Lupton Reinhard presents a vision of Jewish femininity that is both progressive and rooted in tradition, an unapologetic mixture of sacred and profane. The artist’s first-ever print, each silkscreen edition is hand-embellished by Lupton Reinhard with Swarovski crystals, a signature element of her work.
Based on one of Lupton Reinhard’s original paintings, In the Summertime, for my Bubbie over-performs and exaggerates Jewish rituals while the work simultaneously buries its Jewishness in color, pattern, ornament and femininity. Recalling images from childhood of her Bubbie in a head covering, Lupton Reinhard evokes “old country” spirit and modesty, with a hint of sarcastic femininity. Through an over-performance of femininity—hair, lips, eyes, hands—the work teeters between the lines of ugliness and beauty, memory and photography, heavy-headedness and delicacy. Says the artist: I seek to depict the Jewish woman as mischievous yet nurturing, desirable yet frightening, beautiful yet strange, almost like a siren or fairy or other-worldly creature. I want to force the viewer to dig past the initial sort of bait, the shiny finish, and find the complicated, hard-to-articulate feelings." Each print is uniquely adorned with a Pointillist application of Swarovski crystals, creating unexpected moments of light and texture that dissolve the boundary between the real and unreal.
