DTW Arts Scholarship
Established in 2024 by multimedia artist Tyrrell Winston, DTW Arts Scholarship is a new artist residency program conceived on the basis of nurturing Detroit-based talent. Located at LANTERN—a mixed-use building in Detroit’s East Village neighborhood which houses local arts nonprofits Signal-Return and PASC, as well as studio and creative retail spaces—, the program will select one fellow annually to receive a year of studio space in the newly developed, community-driven building, monthly material stipends, and mentorship from Winston himself. Winston will partner with a different brand for each iteration, leveraging the support of the chosen organization to foster interdisciplinary and cross-cultural dialogues within the visual arts-based program.
Davariz Broaden has been selected as the inaugural DTW artist-in-residence, with global clothing brand Stone Island as the program’s partner for the 2024/2025 season.
ON TYRRELL WINSTON, ARTIST AND FOUNDER OF DTW Arts Scholarship
Living in Southern California and New York City prior to establishing roots in his now hometown of Detroit in 2022, Winston’s paintings, sculptures and installations use sport as a medium to explore the embedded histories of objects, spaces and gestures. His work serves as a testament to the influence of his environment, drawing inspiration from his studies of and immersion within the streets, communities, and distinct energy that define the essence of Detroit.
My love for Detroit is why I wanted to start this scholarship. It’s important for me to give back to a city that has given me so much in a relatively short period of time. It’s also my way of showing my commitment to the city, the artist explained.
DTW stands for “Detroit Tyrrell Winston,” and the three letters are also an acronym more commonly associated with the Detroit metropolitan region’s international airport. This play on words is exemplary of Winston’s ubiquitous interest in appropriation and reference—whether it be cultural or art historical—within his practice.
ON DAVARIZ BROADEN, DETROIT-BASED VISUAL ARTIST AND 2024/2025 DTW ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE
Davariz Broaden is a Detroit-born-and-based painter represented by Louis Buhl & Co. and the inaugural DTW artist-in-residence. Commonly using a muted color palette, Broaden’s paintings distill a soft essence and highlight the importance of love and beauty within the Black community, as well as nostalgic events in the Black experience. Within his creations, figures gather in moments of simple joy and togetherness—dancing, playing sports, relaxing, exploring. Broaden’s distinct approach to figurative painting, which continues to rapidly progress since the artist first picked up a paint brush in 2020, exemplifies a firm understanding of shadow and drapery attributed to his background in fashion design.
Speaking on his draw towards Broaden when selecting a fit for the program’s debut, Winston expressed, I chose Davariz Broaden because his work is emblematic of the pride and love that Detroiters have for their community. I’ve been following Davariz’s work for a couple of years and to see his work grow has been a great joy. More so than anything, I believe in him as an artist.
