Louis Buhl is pleased to present the gallery’s first exhibition with New York-based artist Calli Moore, titled Invocations, and opening June 8, 2024. Through her luminous and rich flora compositions, Moore’s latest series of paintings present a reflective and transcendent experience of the natural world.
Interested in the intersection of metaphysics, spirituality and the sciences, Moore credits the subconscious mind as the ultimate inspiration behind her works. Captured by the exhibition’s title, she was galvanized by invocations—the word’s meaning of which is to call upon a higher power for direction, answers and assistance—as a guide to discovering each painting’s fate. “The compelling force to create these paintings came not so much from a particular inspiration,” Moore explained, “but from a drive to produce these forms and color with their balance and symmetry, reflecting both celestial and earthly realms.” The advent of Invocations was a display of synchronicity, a topic that has long been researched and has left scientists in awe at the enigma of the postulate. Similar to Carl Jung’s exploration into synchronicities and his study of the physicist Wolfgang Pauli’s dreams to find answer and meaning, Moore seeks to discover the same from the process of painting, each work leading her to a higher knowledge and understanding of her place in the world.
Channeling this idea visually, symmetry frequently emerges in Moore’s paintings, evoking a sense of harmony and balance. The artist naturally gravitates towards this quality in her work due to the belief that such uniformity fosters personal alignment with the laws of the universe. Philosophically, the mirrored compositions reflect the notion that there is inherent cosmic order, where duality permeates all facets of existence, representing a union of opposites—dark and light, seen and unseen, good and evil, male and female. Through these ethereal abstractions, Moore seeks to express a deeper dimension of humanity, capturing an ineffable intimacy that is a part of one’s innermost reality. Invocations celebrates the thrill of existence, and the joining of the individual to the collective universe through the workings of the heart.
